Welcome to Day Nine of my 30-day podcasting posting challenge. Today’s episode is very close to my heart.
As someone who has struggled with staying organized for a long time and carried a lot of shame because of it, I have learned that organizing is much deeper than having your space look Pinterest perfect or simply putting things away.
There is often an emotional side to clutter and disorganization.
Why we hold onto certain items.
Why certain spaces feel heavy.
Why even simple resets can feel overwhelming.
There are also patterns behind how we move through our day.
The habits we repeat.
The routines we fall into.
The natural rhythms that show up when we look closely at how we live.
When we ignore those patterns, or when life changes and we keep forcing ourselves to use a space the same way, things start breaking down. We try to adjust ourselves to the space instead of letting the space support us.
That is why I created the OASIS framework.
🌿 Why This Topic Matters to Me
Growing up, my relationship with “stuff” was not simple. My former stepdad used to threaten to throw everything away or put my belongings into trash bags. For a kid with an ADHD brain, that created a lot of fear and shame.
On the other side of that, my mom was not around often because she was working a lot, but she gave me things. So I held onto them. Those items became my connection to her. They became my security blanket. Holding onto my belongings felt like holding onto pieces of my story. Letting go felt impossible.
People did not think I would ever get organized. And honestly, for a long time, I did not think so either.
But after a lot of healing, awareness work, and therapy, I learned something important.
Letting go is not about getting rid of items.
It is about creating peace.
It is about finding ways to live in my space so it supports me, instead of me working overtime to keep up with it.
As I am learning new ways to live in my space, I am also letting go of my old security blanket and the version of life that kept me holding onto things that no longer serve me. I have been filming parts of that process. When the time feels right, I will share my decluttering story and the steps I have taken to release what I once thought I needed to feel safe.
Now let’s walk through OASIS.
🌿 O — Observe the Space
This step is about noticing what is happening without pressure.
Ask yourself:
• What items end up out most often?
• Which areas or surfaces tend to get cluttered?
• What feels easy to find or easy to reach?
• What feels hard to get to or takes more effort to put back?
• What is already working?
Notice both what ends up out and where it lands.
This helps you understand your natural patterns without pressure or shame.
🌿 A — Acknowledge Your Needs
This step connects the space to your real life.
Ask:
• What do I need this space to help me do?
• How do I want this space to feel?
• What slows me down or drains my energy?
• What would make this easier on my busiest days?
• What support would help me stay consistent?
When your space does not match your routines or energy, things pile up.
Acknowledging your needs helps the system support your actual life.
🌿 S — Simplify the System
This step is about making the space easier to use and easier to reset.
You can simplify by:
• choosing homes that match how you naturally use the space
• keeping the items you use most within easy reach
• creating quick or easy put-away spots
• using containers to guide where items live
• reducing the number of decisions your brain has to make
• building routines that take as little effort as possible
When a system has too many steps, it takes more energy.
Things are less likely to get put away.
A simple system supports you even on low-energy days.
🌿 I — Identify the Next Step
This is where you create momentum.
One step could be:
• clearing one section of a counter
• gathering similar items into one spot
• emptying one drawer
• setting up one container
• tossing obvious trash
• moving daily use items to their true home
• making a simple plan for how you want the space to function
One tiny step lowers overwhelm and helps you move forward.
🌿 S — Sustain the System
This is your realistic maintenance phase.
It is not perfection.
It is not pressure.
You can sustain your system by:
• using labels so future-you remembers the plan
• choosing a “three items out” cue so you know when to reset
• doing quick resets that take under a minute
• choosing routines that feel doable
• adjusting the system when your needs or routines change
• or using a simple five-minute cleanup if you have others helping
Sustainment keeps your system supportive without adding mental load.
It is about keeping a workable space, not a perfect space.
🌿 Closing
That is OASIS.
A simple ADHD friendly organizing system that honors your emotional needs, your patterns, and the way you naturally move through your life.
