Beginning the Journey to a More Peaceful Home

Hello, welcome back to Sanctuary Sunday and welcome to Episode 17. Today’s episode is arriving a little later than planned, and I want to share why. I spent the last four days performing my military duties, and it was such a busy time that even though I made coffee on Thursday, I ended up putting it in the refrigerator and didn’t even get a chance to heat it up.

By the time I came home and handled everything that needed my attention, my body was so exhausted that I couldn’t keep my eyes open or even think straight. I chose rest, and honestly, that fits perfectly with the heart behind Sanctuary Sunday.

What Sanctuary Means

Sanctuary is the space you create for yourself when life is full.
It is a pause that helps you breathe again.

Today’s Focus: Household Management

We’re starting a new theme for Sanctuary Sunday: household management.
What it is, why it matters, and how it can support your brain.

What Household Management Really Is

Household management is a set of rhythms, routines, and decisions that help your home run more smoothly.

It is not deep cleaning.
It is not perfection.
It is not a rigid schedule.

It is the quiet, behind-the-scenes work that keeps daily life from becoming a constant emergency.

It includes things like:
 • choosing the best times or days to do laundry
 • how dishes get done
 • how to go grocery shopping
 • meal prepping or cooking
 • keeping everyday spaces reasonably functional

Just a few examples.

These routines make everyday life feel a little easier and can support you in creating a home that feels more manageable and peaceful.

Why Household Management Matters for ADHD Brains

Good household management reduces something called decision fatigue.

Decision fatigue shows up when your brain has to make too many choices throughout the day and starts to feel overwhelmed or tired.

Simple routines remove some of those extra decisions so your day flows with less pressure.

Household management also:
 • lowers the emotional weight of chores
 • prevents chaos from building until it feels unmanageable
 • helps you move through your day without constantly asking “what’s next?”

A supportive system does not restrict you.
It frees up your energy so your brain can focus on other things.

How Systems Ease the Mental Load

When you create systems that fit your brain:

• the next step becomes clear and less demanding
• you stop relying on memory alone
• you create a sense of ease that carries you through your day

A good system:
 • keeps things moving without needing a burst of motivation
 • gives your body cues
 • helps your space support you rather than drain you
 • makes returning to order easier after a busy or overwhelming day or week

A Gentle First Step

Since this is our first week introducing household management, let’s keep it simple.

Think about one area of daily life that feels unclear, inconsistent, or heavier than it needs to be.

Instead of trying to fix it today, just take a moment to explore what might help.

Here are a few possibilities:

• If you share a home, is there a task only one person knows how to do?
You might write down the steps so others can do it too.
When information is shared, responsibility is shared.

• Which day of the week naturally works best for laundry based on your real patterns?
Not an ideal schedule. Your actual life.

• What kind of meal planning would make the week feel smoother?
Maybe two or three simple meals is enough.

• If mornings feel rushed, what rhythm would support your future self?
Setting out clothes… prepping breakfast… something small.

Household management begins with noticing what your routines are asking for.
You do not need to solve everything at once.

Just choosing one area to look at with fresh eyes is a gentle and powerful first step.

Reflection Question for the Week

  • What tasks or routines in your home feel tedious or take more time and energy than they should?
  • Which ones feel heavy, frustrating, or draining?

Your answers will show you where household management can support you the most.
