Maybe the Space Is Enough
Sanctuary Sunday β Episode 52
Hello, and welcome to Sanctuary Sunday, episode 52.
All week we've been talking about decluttering, and as I've been going through my own things, I noticed something that I honestly wasn't expecting.
In my office, I had these letter-size zip folios that I used for planners and binders.
They were taking up a good amount of space, so I moved them out to basically s-sell them so they're in a clear container, and put my business card in that space instead.
But my business cards only take up about half of the space that was full before.
And when I looked at it afterward, I realized how much I liked seeing that extra space.
Everything isn't packed so tightly together anymore.
There's room.
And just looking at it gives me this sense of relief and peace.
And that made me think about something.
Some of the Space Can Just Be Space
Yesterday, for System Saturday, I talked about deciding how much space I want to dedicate to the things I keep.
But today, I'm realizing something else.
I don't have to dedicate all of my spaces to things.
Some of the space can just be space.
I don't have to immediately figure out what else could fit there.
I don't have to find another item to put there just because there's room.
Maybe someday I'll decide that I want to use that space for something else, and that's fine.
But right now, I really like the way it feels.
Maybe the Empty Space Is Giving Us Something Too
I think it's easy to look at an empty shelf, an empty corner, or an empty space and think that something belongs there.
But maybe the empty space is giving us something too.
Maybe it gives our eyes somewhere to rest.
Maybe the room feels a little calmer.
Maybe things don't feel so crowded.
Maybe it's easier to see and enjoy the things that are still there.
For me, that's what I'm noticing in my office.
The space isn't empty because I forgot to put something there.
It's simply not as full anymore.
And I like that feeling.
You Don't Have to Decide Right Away
And I think that's another thing I've learned through all of this.
Just because you create some space doesn't mean you have to decide right away what you're going to do with it.
You can live with it for a little while.
You can see how it feels.
You can notice whether the space makes the room feel calmer or easier to be in.
And if you later decide you want to put something there, you can.
Nothing says that an empty space has to stay an empty space forever.
But you also don't have to fill it just because you can.
Just Notice
So for Sanctuary Sunday, I don't have a big action step for you.
I just want you to notice.
Is there a space in your home that has a little more room than it used to?
Maybe it's a shelf.
Maybe it's a drawer.
Maybe it's a countertop.
Maybe it's one little corner.
Before you decide what should go there next, take a moment and notice how that space feels.
Does it feel calmer?
Does it feel lighter?
Does it give you a little more breathing room?
Or maybe you realize you would rather use that space for something else, maybe something that doesn't have a home yet.
There's no right answer.
Just give yourself a chance to experience the space before deciding what comes next.
Because sometimes the space itself might be exactly what you needed.
Until Next Time
Thank you for spending a little bit of your day with me.
Until next time, I'll see you for Momentum Monday.
Until then, I hope today's episode helped you create a little more clarity, feel a little more calm, and have a little more confidence.
